Week 10- Flipgrid
The mission of Flipgrid is to empower learners of all ages
to define their voices, share their voices, and respect the diverse voices of
others.
Flipgrid is a computer, smart phone, or tablet app that
allows students to share their ideas through videos. Students are tasked to
create short video responses to a given question or topic.
According to their website there are many uses for Flipgrid
including classrooms, PLN + Staff, schools, events, and anyone. I looked at a
few of their videos and this seems like a wonderful resource. I would love to
try it out with an older group of kids. Again I think it would be a bit challenging
because students need access to a computer or phone (which most do but some do
not). In the videos it explained that some students who are typically shy and
quiet in class are a lot more outgoing and confident when they record their
video responses.
Pros
Allow students to respond them selves in similar way to Instagram
story video or snap chat.
Teacher can change privacy settings so students can’t see
their classmates responses
Use as a critique suggestion lesson (positive vs negative criticism)
Student who may have a harder time responding to answers in
class may show they are great at answering and explaining given question
through video response.
Deaf students- Allow to communicate in first language ASL
instead of typing on computer.
Responses can be 15seconds-90seconds for free version or 15seconds
-5 minutes for classroom option
Students can reply to others responses creating an active
learning environment.
Cons
Need access to computer, table, or phone at home
Some students may be uncomfortable answering questions over
video
Not free- 1 flipgrid is free but to get it for a classroom
it is $65 for a year

Thanks for the pros and cons - makes it easy to see what the tools strengths are at a glance. I find it interesting that it says that many students who are typically shy and quiet in class are more outgoing/confident when they record their answers... I would think that recording yourself would make students even more self-conscious (I know it does for me!) Maybe if everyone is doing it, that helps with the confidence factor. Great post!
ReplyDeleteI also liked the approach of giving us the pros and cons - that was great! I am having my students in American Lit right now look up allusions in a short story by Herman Melville. I was trying to think how they could use Flipgrid for our analysis since I have them pulling out their phones this week to look stuff up. They might be able to find a You Tube Video on some of those allusions - like on Charlemagne. But I don't see much else. I guess I am limited by my own imagination. Do you have any ideas for me?
ReplyDeleteToo funny. I did Flipgrid this week as well. I haven't used it in my classroom yet. I think it could work with kinders and I want to try to use it as a response to my UbD unit.
ReplyDeleteSo this is the one we are to get ready for. I will attempt to be ready.
ReplyDeleteFlipgrid is awesome, thanks for having us try it out before your presentation. I like the idea of havings students use Flipgrid as they go through the scientific process. Like a quick video blog of the steps of their experiment. Thanks for the ideas and thanks for sharing.
