Week 6- ABCMouse
https://www.abcmouse.com
This downloadable app has more than 7,000 fun and interactive learning activities for children ages 2-8 that teach reading, math, beginning science, art, music and more. It can be dowloaded on iPad, iPhone Kindle Fire, and most Android phones.
The school I work in has these downloaded on every computer in the classroom and each iPad used by the after school program. The kids love them and really enjoy doing the activities. Each student definitely has certain categories they prefer and it can at times be a challenge to get them to do anything else. As I explored this app more I decided it is something I would like to download to play with my son who is almost 4.
Because I would I would like to use this with my preschooler and with students I teach I focused on looking at the activities for preschool and Kindergarten (what I am teaching this year).
Preschool
Reading- Uppercase Alphabet A-Z
Math- Numbers 1-5, Shapes
World around us- Getting dressed, my body, and the market
Art and Colors- Colors
There is a heavy focus on reading and the building the beginning foundations with vocabulary and phonemic awareness I believe to help them when they begin Kindergarten. There are interactive stories, alphabet games, painting, and songs
Kindergarten
Reading- Alphabet, basic phonics, words, word families, and sight words
Math- Numbers 0-100, shapes, basic addition and subtraction, patterns, and telling time
World around us- four seasons, and planets
Art and Coloring- Colors and shades of colors
Again this focus on stories, games, and activities that practice important skills for Kindergartners to develop. The app offers alphabet games, phonics games, word family games, sight word games, sight word coloring, and alphabet songs.

When my children were younger they used to want to get on to this site, but it always had a pricetag on it. Does it still have a cost or have they made more open source? I would check it out, but my youngest is probably too old for this now and our schools aren't currently using it.
ReplyDeleteThe homepage is so adorable and kid-friendly! Even though you have to buy a subscription, I like that they at least offer a free 30 day trial. And the subscription doesn't seem that unreasonable either. This would be a great resource for parents who want to encourage learning at home as well as school, or to prepare students to enter school!
ReplyDeleteHow early do you think you could start using this? Would you think it would be useful for kids younger than 4?
ReplyDeleteI will be teaching first grade next year and can see how this website would be very beneficial. I will bookmark this for next year so I can use the 30 day trial. I was also impressed that they yearly subscription was on special for under $60. I could see me using it during my reading group time.
ReplyDeleteI hate to say it but I was not a big fan of ABC Mouse as a parent. We used it for a couple of months. I went from that to the "hooked on phonics" app. That one was a flat purchase fee and was pretty straight forward. I later switched to "Homer learn to read" and that one was free for teachers. I would highly recommend looking at that app.
ReplyDeleteWhat ages groups is this for? How instructional are they? Is it more fun or more practice?
ReplyDeleteSuper cute - I believe the Autism class I worked in used this - at least the graphics look familiar. Do you use this as a reward or as part of the regular curriculum? Is is to keep kids engaged while you work with small groups?
